Open link to WordPress post into wp app

  1. It would.be handy to be able to open links to posts contained in blogs of mine to be able to edit them into the WordPress app.

    Is there a way to?

Only thing I managed to do was opening them into reader mode, where I cannot edit them.

My blog has almost 5000 posts and if I search for old posts into WordPress app I can retrieve only theast ones, whereas a need a way to search the whole archive, then edit I to the app.

Thank you and have a wonderful year 2020.

  2. Hi there!

Can you confirm the site URL you are working with so we can look into an option for this? It may be possible based on the type of site you are working with.

If you can also confirm where you are originally looking at the posts? For example, are you looking to have the option to view your post from the browser on your device and then open these in the app using an 'edit' button?

It may not be possible to have them open in the app directly, but if you're logged into your site's account in the browser, it could be possible to add an edit button to do so from within the browser. You can read more about this here: https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/save-time-by-adding-a-quick-edit-button-in-wordpress-posts/.

If you're uncomfortable sharing these details here, please feel free to reach out to support through the app by clicking on ME (the little icon with the profile of a person inside a circle) and going to Help & Support.

    Thank you!

  3. Thank you for your kind and interesting reply.

My blog is a self hosted one with jetpack enabled at blog.solignani.it

Today's post, for instance, is at https://blog.solignani.it/01/03/fai-lo-switch-dal-pensare-al-sentire/

I usually browse my past posts (there are approx 5 thousands of them as yet) with Mozilla Firefox on my note 10 Android device.

When in need of editing an old post, which is something I do very frequently, I cannot do it with the browser, too uncomfortable, it just doesn't work, feasible but too much uncomfortable.

With the Android WordPress local app it's a much better experience.

So I would like to browse my blog with Mozilla but open the same post I am viewing in Firefox into WordPress Android app for editing. In other terms, I would be able to pass an URL to a post to the WordPress Android app to edit the post into the app.

As regards the edit button you suggest me to add: would clicking on that button lead me into editing inside the WordPress Android app or instead into the WordPress mobile interface inside Mozilla? If it's the latter it's no much use for me sorry.

And yes I could open the WordPress Android app and search for the post I am viewing into the blog, but as a matter of fact the app doesn't seem to search the whole archive but just a subset of it (I posted another question regarding that).

So to sum it up I would solve my situation if I could either open for editing a link into the WordPress Android app or search into the same app the whole post's archive.

Thank you for you help on the matter, have a nice day.

Should you wish to, please feel free to contact me privately.

  4. Hi there!

    Thanks for providing these details.

I've been looking into the issue with the search in the app not working correctly for you and will follow up with our developers on this for you as it seems it may be a bug we'll need to address.

As for getting the edit button to work for you to redirect to the app, this may work if instead of browsing the post from the browser directly, you click on 'My Sites > View Site'. From here, you are brought to a browser version of the site which is still internal to the app, so clicking on a edit button that could be added using the same instructions I posted above may work for you.

If this doesn't work, hopefully, we can get the search issue addressed and this will make your workflow a lot easier. I'll follow up on the other thread once I have additional details on this.

    Thank you!

  5. Thank you for your detailed reply.

I worked a bit on the matter. I didn't manage to add the quick edit button as per istructions on https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/save-time-by-adding-a-quick-edit-button-in-wordpress-posts/ but I went the post text itself and put the link to edit it so that I could try it, i.e. https://blog.solignani.it/wp-admin/post.php?post=18142&action=edit

Then I saved and went into the wordpress android app, opened the in app browser, then clicked on that link, well it just opened the edit section of the dashboard into the in app browser, so no joy.

Best way to fix the thing, if developers are willing to, would be to be able to send a link to the wordpress android app and let it open with the edit section (not the in app browser of course).

The search function could also do. Now it works but only on a subset of the archive, if you scroll downwards it extends the subset but if you have to, say, edit a post from 3 tears ago every time you have to scroll for, say, 20 minutes...

    Thank you.

  6. Hi there!

Thanks for confirming this didn't work out as expected for you. I also tried on my end with the 'edit' link, but as it doesn't see you as logged in from the in-app browser, it doesn't show the edit link as I thought it might have.

I've followed up on the search issue, so maybe that will be something we can address.

    Thank you!

  7. Thank you.

As a matter of fact, you can login.even.ffom.the in app browser, you can put a link to the login section ,/wp-admin somewhere on the blog.then sign in. I did it but still the link didn't show.

    Thank you.

  8. Hi there!

Even with the link showing in the in-app browser, it will still redirect you to the browser editor it seems. I tried this and hoped that it could work, but it didn't do as expected.

I have opened a report with our developer team about the search issue for you after some investigation. You can follow along for any developments here: https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Android/issues/11165

    Thank you!

  9. Thank you so much.

  10. You're welcome!

Also letting you know that the developers have looked into this and the issue should be fixed with the next update in version 14.1. Hopefully, that resolves the problem of not being able to click to edit in the app and makes it easier for you to edit your posts.

Let us know if there are any problems after the update.

    Best Regards!
