Visual editing problems?

I'm having odd issues when using the visual editor: I seemingly "lose" styled elements (bold items, etc.) if I delete/edit portions of the formatted text. For instance, if I click the bold 'b' and type Tuesday then go and delete the 'Y' the whole word/sentence gets it's style removed.
I wonder if the style is really being un-applied or if it's just rendering that way in the app's editor? Others experiencing this?
I'm using an HTC Evo 4G.
