Problem solved: it was down to not having permissions to create a new blogs.dir directory.

You need to create a blogs.dir directory in wp-content and chmod it to 777.

The fact that the new app didn't show an error threw me off the scent a little - I had the same problem before with single sites but the previous version of the app displayed an error (though not saying what caused the failure).

At this point it's worth pointing out that the iOS version is much more helpful in that regard. I just tested this out and when I try to post with an embedded image the iOS gives you a detailed error message along the lines of:

Could not write file 20120114-122333.jpg (Unable to create directory) /home/user/public_html/website.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/5/2012/01 Is its parent directory writable by the server?)

The new Android app doesn't display any error message.

The Android app is great but the lack of useful error messages is a bit of an issue

Apologies for reposting but my last post title was misleading (couldn't find a way of deleting).

I can't seem to upload images to self hosted multisite blogs - the app works fine for single site WP installs. Text posts work fine - I can select an image from my phone and see a thumbnail in my post but when I publish there is text but no image.

There are no error messages to indicate that anything is wrong and the images do not exceed the file size upload limits set in network admin. This holds true whether I try via 3G or wifi.
